Rolfing, usually a series of ten body manipulation treatments within the fascia or connective tissue, re-aligns the structural segments of the body around a vertical axis. Pressure by the Rolfer creates heat which allows a chemical change to occur. Then your flexing or extending of the muscle attached reminds the body memory of where it belongs. In this way Rolfing allows you to sit walk and stand in ways that are better for your posture. A body thus organized makes you to look and feel your best, improves flexibility and range of motion. It serves as an effective prevention of injury.
“The human body is like a house. It’s structured so that each part has it’s proper place and each piece interlocks to balance the load of the others.”
To determine if Rolfing is for you, I offer a free consultation where I assess your body, find out what your goals are, get a picture of what types of accidents, illnesses, surgeries or injuries your body has sustained. I explain Rolfing in detail and we decide how to proceed. If after the consultation there are still questions, then a rule of thumb for me is that you undergo the first three treatments. If after the third treatment you are not noticing significant positive changes, then perhaps Rolfing is not for you.
“Rolfers insist that the human body is so plastic that its alignment can be brought into harmony with gravity at practically any time of life.”
Rolfing is different from most forms of bodywork or manipulation. Each treatment works on a specific area of the body. Rolfers work on connective tissue lengthening and changing its shape within a finite number of treatments. We get you involved in the process by your flexing or extending the muscle attached to the tendons, ligaments or cartilage we are manipulating. So together Rolfer and client re-educate you on “how to be more in alignment within your body.” Also Rolfing exists within a framework of usually a finite number of treatments, each building upon the one before it. So there is a certain chronology with the work. After the series is complete you don’t keep coming back for more. Rolfing is not about ‘building a practice.’
“A fundamental purpose of Rolfing, is to change structure to more effectively utilize gravity.” – Ida Rolf

Client / Palm Desert, CA
Bill LeGrave began his Rolfing experience in 1986. After seeking various types of treatment for a herniated disc including medical in the form of anti-inflammatory pain pills and muscle relaxants in addition to physical therapy he tried a more holistic approach for the sciatic pain down his left leg.
Acupuncture kept the pain away for 3 hour stints. Chiropractic treatments helped for awhile, but it always came back. After 5 years of these treatments he met a Rolfer who explained this common-sense structural approach to reorganizing the body. The sciatic pain went away after his third treatment and stayed away for 15 years.
Upon completion of his Rolfing training, Bill sold his wholesale greenhouse in Milwaukee, went back to college to take the required prerequisites to get into the Rolf Institute and in 1989 completed his training. He worked one year in Milwaukee before moving to the greater Palm Springs area. In 2002 Bill completed his Advanced Rolfing training.
